Where Black America keeps its receipts.

Privacy Policy

Last updated September 21, 2026

This policy explains what information the black [index] (theblackindex.org) collects, why, and what you can do about it. The site is run by The Black Index. We collect as little as we can.

If you only read the site

  • You do not need an account or to give us any information to read.
  • We do not run advertising, tracking cookies or analytics tools on the site, and the site sets no cookies while you only read.
  • When your browser loads a page, our hosting provider, Amazon Web Services, receives technical information such as your IP address and browser type, as any website host does. We do not use it to identify you.
  • The site loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so Google also receives your IP address and browser details when a page loads.

If you join as a member

If you join, this is what we collect.

  • Your display name, email address and password. Your password is stored by our sign in provider in scrambled form. We cannot read it.
  • Payment. Stripe collects your card details and billing information. We do not receive or store your full card number. We keep a record that you paid and when your membership ends.
  • Your comments and reports, with the time you posted them.
  • Technical information used to keep the site safe, such as sign in attempts and your IP address.
  • A bot check. A check called Cloudflare Turnstile runs on the join form and the forgot password form. Cloudflare receives information about your browser to tell people from bots.
  • Sign in cookies. When you sign in, the site sets two small cookies in your browser to keep you signed in. Page scripts cannot read them, and your browser sends them only to our sign in service. They are the only cookies we set, the site needs them to work, and signing out removes them.

How we use information

  • To create and run your membership.
  • To show your comments.
  • To email you verification codes, reminders about your membership and important notices about your account, such as a note to your old address if your email address changes. Stripe emails your payment receipt.
  • To keep the site safe from abuse and bots.
  • To reply when you contact us.
  • To meet legal, tax and accounting duties.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

What is public

Your display name and your comments are public. Your email address is never shown.

Who else handles your information

These companies handle information only to provide their services to us.

We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect people from harm.

How long we keep it

We keep your account while your membership is active and for a reasonable time after it ends, so you can renew. Your comments stay until you delete them. If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete your personal details and either remove your display name from your comments or delete the comments, as you choose. We keep payment records for as long as tax and accounting laws require. Backups may hold copies for a short time.

Your choices

You can ask to see, correct or delete the information we hold about you by emailing support@theblackindex.org. Depending on where you live, the law may give you other rights, and we will honor them. You can delete your own comments at any time.

Children

The site is not meant for children under 13, and membership is for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Security

We use reputable providers and sensible safeguards, such as encrypting information as it travels. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change matters, we will tell members by email.
